‘Were I a King’ is a programme that asks the audience to question what it means to be a monarch.

Through the music of court composers, we aim to showcase the amazing musical landscape by which monarchs of the late renaissance period would have been surrounded.

With Kim Porter (Alto), we will explore choral works and madrigals of the time, starting and finishing with settings of the titular piece ‘Were I a King’ by William Mundy.

The same text has been set by Kim Porter, who joins us for the whole programme, singing works by Byrd, Tomkins, Ward and Piers Kennedy.
