The Sixteen Choir

Bach and Byrd

with Harry Christophers (conductor)

Bach and Byrd
Martin Luther’s attack on the corrupt Renaissance papacy and the resulting schism that divided the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches set the foundations for the works in The Sixteen’s programme. While Johann Sebastian Bach enhanced the Lutheran liturgy with his remarkable sacred cantatas, William Byrd expressed a longing for the return of the old Catholic faith to Elizabeth I’s England in works tinged with regret and defiance.

Johann Sebastian Bach Ich steh' mit einem Fuss im Grabe, BWV156 – Sinfonia
Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV147 – Chorale: Jesus bleibet meine Freude
Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, BWV182 – Sinfonia
William Byrd Emendemus in melius
Johann Sebastian Bach Herr, deine Augen sehem nach dem Glauben, BWV102
INTERVAL
Johann Sebastian Bach Geist und Seele wird verwirret, BWV35 – Sinfonia
William Byrd Turn our captivity, O Lord
Johann Sebastian Bach Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal, BWV146
