Blondel

Short & Sweet

Music for curtals/duclians and other wind instruments of the 16th & 17th century

Short & Sweet
Blondel are back, and this time they're bringing out the curtals! Invented in the 16th century, these instruments had a lot in common with the double-reeded shawms, but the introduction of the double bore with a U-bend at the bottom to make them more compact also gave them a sweeter tone. More compact design means bass instruments (and lower) become much more practical and ergonomic, allowing virtuosic playing even in the lower registers. Like most instruments of the era they were produced in a range of sizes from soprano, through alto and tenor, to basses and beyond. It was these instrument which went on to be developed into the bassoon as we know it today.

The programme will include some of our favourite consorts, chansons and dance tunes from the 16th & 17th centuries performed on trios of curtals, recorders and bagpipes.

Refreshments will be served after the concert, with donations to church funds.
