Chelys Consort of Viols
What Is Our Life?
Music by the English composer Orlando Gibbons
Emily Atkinson (soprano)
Gibbons was a virtuoso keyboard player, acknowledged as having 'the best hand in England' and 'the finest finger of that age'. Although most famous today for his vocal works, he wrote significantly for the viol consort, composing fantasias, In Nomines, and pavans and galliards. Gibbons' teachers included his own brother, Edward, and possibly also William Byrd, with whom he contributed to the very first printed collection of keyboard music in England, Parthenia, in 1612. Gibbons' First Set of Madrigals and Motets, published the same year, includes vocal works performed in this programme.
