The French Connection II - The Glory of Versailles

Peter Holman (director, harpsichord), soloist Asuka Sumi (violin)
The French Connection II - The Glory of Versailles
For the second of our French summer mini-series Leeds Baroque orchestra, directed by Peter Holman and featuring their leader Asuka Sumi as soloist, return to the intriguing surroundings of The Old Woollen at Sunny Bank Mills. The venue, part of a converted worsted mill, provides an intimate and relaxed café-style performance space.

Whilst we can't provide the architectural 'Glories of Versailles' at Sunny Bank, the music can. With the dance at it's heart, and with smaller-scale works by Marin Marais (La desolée ou passacaille lente ) and Joseph-Bodin de Boismortier's Quinque sur l’octave, the programme includes François Couperin's Concert dans le goût théatral (reconstructed by Peter Holman), Jean-Féry Rebel's Les caractères de la danse, and Jean-Philippe Rameau's Danse de grand calumet de la paix from Les Indes Galantes. Leader of the orchestra, Asuka Sumi, takes on a solo role for Jean-Marie Leclair: Concerto in A minor op. 7 no. 5.

Note that due to the nature of the performance space, seating is limited and early booking is advised.
