La Prima Donna

La Prima Donna
La Prima Donna is a programme of early Baroque works inspired by the feminine, or written for and by women, showcasing some of the most innovative and challenging instrumental works of the 17th century. From the vividly episodic ‘La Cattarina’ by Merula to prolific Italian composer Isabella Leonarda’s third sonata, this concert explores and celebrates female artistry and virtuosity through the lens of dynamic chamber music. Culminating in Vivaldi’s famous ‘La Folia’, composed whilst he was working with the talented and meticulously educated female orphans of the Ospedale della Pietà, La Prima Donna reflects our wish to pay tribute to the work of unnamed female musicians throughout history.
