Music in this concert takes much of its textual influence from the words of poet Battista Guarini, court wordsmith to Duke Alfonso II in Ferrara during the latter part of the sixteenth century. Guarini's poems used the ancient mythical stories of Arcadia, home to shepherds and shepherdesses whose activities were influenced and overseen by gods and goddesses.

Diana, goddess of war, the moon and love, has become displeased with the Arcadian mortals and has demanded the sacrifice of a maiden descended from the Gods. This is a convoluted story; don't expect to follow all the twists and turns, just come and enjoy the glorious music composed to tell the tale!
