Concert Trombone Quartette

Bruckner at 200

200th Anniversary Concert

The Choir of St Mary the Virgin, John Keys - Director
Bruckner at 200

Join us for a rare performance of music by renowned Austrian composer, Anton Bruckner - in celebration of his 200th anniversary of his birth (1824-2024).

This collaborative programme with the choir of St Mary’s, Nottingham, focusses on Bruckner’s use of the trombone; including his famed Motets for trombones, choir & organ, sacred psalms and his Aequale for trombones, mostly taken from his earlier days whilst working as organist in St Florian Monastery; where he was interred - below the same Monastery organ as his final resting place.

We also include a rare and recently discovered Aequale by contemporary Austro-Hungarian composer, Adolf Müller (1801-1886) in a UK premiere, alongside a cappella works and organ solos by Bruckner; offering further examples of his musical genius. The concert concludes with Bruckner’s first notable large-scale work, his Requiem in D moll (1849).

This unique concert features original Romantic style trombones from the very time of Bruckner, in an historically informed performance; offering a unique sound scape and timbre that Bruckner himself would have been familiar with. Furthermore, these very trombones were used to perform a Bruckner motet for the Coronation of King Charles III, May 2023, courtesy of Adrian France & The Concert Trombone Quartette.
