Bach Motets - Solomon's Knot
Bach Motets, Solomon's Knot

The Recording

This Prospero Classical recording features Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) complete motets, set against the music of the previous generation of his family that inspired him. In his final decade, JS Bach researched and performed motets by his father’s cousin, Johann Christoph (1642-1703), whom he greatly admired. While Johann Sebastian pushed the motet genre to its limits, the influence of his family’s musical tradition is evident.

This CD is the first in a series of location-specific Solomon’s Knot recording projects. They chose the Bachkirche in Arnstadt for its wonderful acoustics and its historical significance. Johann Christoph was born in Arnstadt, and Johann Sebastian’s first job as an organist was at this church, which was later named after him.

The Cover

Why a dancer? Solomon's Knot carefully considered what image best represents this miraculous music and their unique method of performing from memory. The motets feel as fresh as the day they were composed, imparting a sense of modernity. Performing from memory without scores or a conductor allows them to move with each phrase, bringing physicality to the recording.

Memorising these pieces is no simple task, adding a sense of risk and excitement to each performance, demanding both mental and physical stamina. With solo voices blending into an ensemble, our style embraces individuality.

The image of a dancer mid-gesture beautifully captures the weightlessness, power, and timelessness of the music, reflecting the dynamic and individualistic nature of Solomon's Knot performances.

Solomon's Knot recording of Bach Motets is available on CD and all major streaming services.
