The Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) and Cambridge Handel Opera Company (CHOC) unite once again, following their acclaimed recording of Eccles’ Semele, to bring a world-premiere recording of John Weldon’s The Judgment of Paris. This masque, winner of the 1701 Musick Prize, was composed to William Congreve’s libretto, yet never published.
The 1701 competition, sponsored by the Earl of Halifax, sought to revive English opera with entries from renowned composers including John Eccles and Daniel Purcell. Weldon’s entry triumphed, celebrated for its inventive text setting, vibrant instrumental colours, and masterful use of chorus. This recording finally offers audiences the chance to hear the work that captivated 18th-century judges.
Under the direction of Julian Perkins, the recording features the Academy of Ancient Music and a distinguished cast. Kitty Whately, Helen Charlston, and Anna Dennis perform as Venus, Juno, and Pallas, alongside Thomas Walker as Mercury and Jonathan Brown as Paris, presenting Weldon’s rarely heard score.
Released on 7 March 2025 on AAM Records, the recording is available as a beautifully-designed hardback mediabook, complete with essays from historians, musicologists, and other experts. These contributions provide context, exploring the competition’s historical significance and Weldon’s role in English musical heritage—giving this winning masque the long-overdue attention it deserves.
