Sounds of the Square Mile - A docu-concert from the City of London by Thomas Allery
Thomas Allery

Join Thomas Allery as he steps into the churches of the City of London and explores centuries of music, creativity and city life; from the console of the famous Wren Church of St Mary-le-Bow, right in the heart of the City of London, to other locations from across the City.

This hybrid documentary-concert explores the rich history and musical heritage of the City of London on a journey through ancient streets and historic churches, whilst uncovering hidden connections between composers and their masterpieces.

From joyful celebratory pieces to dramatic and stormy compositions, this collection of organ music written for these places, showcases the diverse sounds and styles that filled the magnificent churches of the Square Mile, from the ceremonial Baroque of Stanley, Prelleur and Worgan, to the Romantic soundscapes of composers such as Felix Mendelssohn, Ann Mounsey Bartholomew and Elizabeth Stirling.

Thomas Allery is an organist, harpsichordist and music director of Temple Church. He is organist at St Mary-le-Bow Church in the City of London and a founding member of period instrument group Ensemble Hesperi. Sounds of the Square Mile was brought to life by the outstanding film maker and sound engineer Tom Mungall.
