Composed during his transformative years in Rome, at a point in time when opera was banned by the Pope, Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno (‘The Triumph of Time and Disillusionment’) is Handel’s debut oratorio and a true landmark of the Baroque era. This allegorical gem is a tale of love, choice, temptation and fate, and features some of Handel’s most dazzling, virtuosic and emotive music.

In the story, Beauty (Bellezza) admires herself in Piacere (Pleasure)’s mirror, vowing to live only for pleasure, while Tempo (Time) and Disinganno (Disillusionment) warn her that youth is fleeting and beauty will fade. Piacere attempts to convince Beauty that she can remain forever young and beautiful, promising eternal joy. Time and Disillusionment reveal the harsh reality of decay, causing Beauty to suffer a crisis. Realising the vanity of her former life, Beauty rejects Pleasure, embraces virtue, and finds solace in her spiritual enlightenment.
